If the idea of getting healthy makes you think of sacrifice and deprivation, a trip to Champneys, Tring, could convert you into a born-again health freak.
It’s hard to imagine that this little slice of heaven is just an hour from London. As soon as you sweep through the gates of the imposing Rothschild Mansion, you know you’re in for a treat… but despite its immense size, Champneys still manages to be homely and welcoming. (It’s worth accepting the offer of a guided tour, though, to avoid wasting time wandering forlornly through its vast network of corridors).
The warm and friendly staff members prove to be exceptionally knowledgeable, inspiring trust and confidence even as they recommend a spot of regenerative Kriotherapy – otherwise known as marching round a room chilled to -135ºC. Unique to Champneys in the UK, this unusual treatment is said to help with sleep problems, relieve symptoms of tiredness and depression and aid recovery of physical injuries.
But if your idea of a spa weekend revolves more around pampering and fluffy robes, you won’t be disappointed: the vast range of treatments caters for all tastes, no matter what your preferences, budget or fitness levels.
It’s refreshing to see a good mix of guests, too.
